Excursion to Indy and Kentucky βοΈππ₯
Indy 500 Carb Day ππ¨
I flew from San Francisco to Indianapolis to visit a friend and go to the Indy 500. Carb Day (which precedes the actual Indy 500) was a total blast. We saw a junior championship race and viewed some new and old Vettes. Barenaked Ladies and Steve Miller Band capped the night with live performances. πΈπΆ
Perhaps the greatest part was seeing Ric Flair introduce Steve Miller on stage - Woooooooo! π€π΅
Indy 500 Race ποΈπ
We sat in the Northeast Turn Vista (at turn 3) this year. Fortunately, cool temperatures and cloud cover kept us comfortable since we were exposed to the elements for 3-plus hours. βοΈπ‘οΈ
The views at this section of the track are some of the best! From our vantage point, we saw the racers barrel around turn number 2, whiz by us at turn 3, and round again at turn 4. πππ¨
Two drivers crashed below us and spewed debris within a couple hundred feet of our seats. This is what can happen when things go wrong at 220+ mph. π²π₯
Kentucky Bourbon Trail π₯π€οΈ
On my penultimate day in Indianapolis, we trekked three hours to Kentucky to enjoy some of its finest bourbons. π₯π
Home to natural limestone filtration, Kentuckyβs water is apparently low in iron and high in calcium. This combination is ideal for making bourbon. ππ§ͺ
We visited Maker's Mark and Jim Beam and had dinner in Louisville. We paid for the 2-hour tour of the Makerβs Mark campus, which proved to be worth every penny of admission. In addition to seeing the complete distillation process, we got to taste the bourbon in its various stages with a complete tasting at the end. π½οΈπ₯
